Weight Loss Medication in Primary Care

We understand that there is a national policy around the availability of weight loss medications from 23 June 2025.

GPs in Birmingham and Solihull have not yet received confirmation that they will be commissioned to prescribe these medications.

We are awaiting official guidance and commissioning updates from Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board. Until we receive further guidance, we are unable to issue injectables for Weight Loss.

If the practice is commissioned, the initial criteria for prescribing is very strict. Patients must have a BMI of 40 or higher and 4 out of 5 of the following conditions:-

  • Dyslipidaemia (abnormal fat levels in the blood)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (when your breathing stops and starts while you sleep)
  • Cardiovascular disease (heart and blood vessel disease)
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

The practice offers an in-house weight management clinic run by our nursing team, but we will not be providing injectables in these clinics. If you are eligible for a weight management specialist referral, the nursing team can arrange this for you.
